No more oily woes

No more oily woes
Our last post was on how to nourish and hydrate dry, parched skin. But what about the exact opposite? How does one handle skin which is always oily? People who have oily skin have a series of issues to deal with - pimples, acne, whiteheads, open pores and the urge to wash your face several times.

However with all the problems oily skin comes with, it need not rule your entire life. There are tricks and ways to avoid looking like something which came out of a greasy frying pan. But before we come to solutions, lets look at the causes or triggers that cause oily skin.

Stress, lack of sleep, junk food indulgence, overload of oily foods, medications, hormonal changes, usage of too many skincare products or wrong products and sometimes even genetics could be the cause of your skin being on an oil overdrive.

One can definitely control some of the triggers like getting proper sleep, avoiding oily foods, cutting off from junk food, choosing the right skin products and avoiding too much fiddling with the skin either by hand or with other skincare tools. Anything which can stimulate the skin to produce more oil should be avoided.

People with oily skin should regularly have their vitamins and zinc. Zinc goes a long way in keeping acne away. Do not pinch or poke zits and pimples. Avoid washing your face with hot water to get rid of the oil. It will only dry out your skin which in turn makes your skin producemore oil. Use a gentle cleanser and exfoliator in your cleaning regime. Never go to sleep with make-up on.

Some ingredients which are absolutely beneficial for people with dry skin are clay masks made of kaolin or bentonite clay (use once a week), cold black tea, tomatoes, lemon juice, aloe vera, papaya, apple cider vinegar, oatmeal and gram flour.

These ingredients control the production of excess sebum thereby preventing or minimizing acne and pimple breakouts whilst preventing occurrence of large pores and whiteheads.
A green tea and oatmeal mask too does wonders for oily skin. You can buy one here.

If you love to use makeup, use a primer before applying makeup to even out your skin. Use water based products as compared to oil based ones. Do not use excess powder and always carry blotting paper to dab out the extra oil.

Gentle scrubbing with a good face scrub once a week helps keep your skin clean while unclogging the pores of impurities and grime. Lastly always use a sunscreen before stepping out.

Oily skin can be a downer but it has a few benefits as well. Oily skin tends to wrinkle less and does not age as fast as dry skin. So remember the advantages of oily skin, do not stress about its downsides and with a little help and discipline you can absolutely put your best face forward, without the excess oil.
